Technology has changed the way we work. In fact, it has changed the way we live. As creatives, and people, we rely on the the use of computers, tablets and smartphones now, more than ever. As I type on a computer, I have just checked-in to an upcoming flight and downloaded my boarding pass on my phone. Wow, how technology has made life so much easier.
But are we better for it?
No, this isn't an anti-technology, pick up a pencil and paper talk (although I highly encourage it from time to time!). I simply ask the question, are we getting better? Are we utilizing technology in a way that makes us better as creatives, and as people?
When was the last time you took a class on Photoshop? When was the last time I did?
The World Wide Web has enabled resources and learning tools to literally be at our fingertips, but do we utilize them to better ourselves? I am speaking to the choir, I know, but Youtube has created a "Learn How to Do..." video on almost any subject! Can we learn from these?
What about Lynda.com? Ever tried it?
As we near the end of the first quarter of 2015, I have committed myself to learning After Effects. I am a slow learner at such things, but I know I will be better at what I do. I have also committed myself to building my freelance business, and learning how to do it the right way. It is a challenge, I assure you!
Why am I investing the time in this post, you ask? It seems so simple: better ourselves. If it is so simple, why don't we challenge ourselves to be better every day?
In the same way technology has allowed us to better ourselves, it has also allowed us to grow lazy. Why learn how to utilize After Effects when you can buy a template (Which I've done)? Why is it important I learn the proper technique for playing piano when I can just use software to sample the sounds? See what I mean? Technologies have created so many wonderful advances for Creatives, but we must use them to do just that: advance us.
We need to get better. We need to get better at being Creatives. We need to get better at being Humans.
As we move firmly in to 2015, I want to Get Better. And, as I move forward from here, I want to be Getting Better everyday.
